Community Fall Cleanup Day (Demo)
City Hall, Abbeville
About Our Town
Abbeville is a city in southeast Alabama and the seat of Henry County. It grew up around a trading post on Abbie Creek — its name comes from the Muscogee Yatta Abba, “dogwood tree grove.”
Abbeville has been the county seat since 1833 and incorporated in 1853. After a 1906 fire destroyed most of the business district, residents rebuilt in brick — the Henry County Courthouse still anchors Courthouse Square.
City government is a mayor–council form. Mayor Jimmy Money and the City Council serve a community of about 2,360 residents (2,358 in the 2020 census).

History of Abbeville
From a dogwood grove to the Henry County seat
Abbeville takes its name from Abbie Creek — from the Muscogee words Yatta Abba, meaning “dogwood tree grove.” European-American settlers opened a trading post here around 1819, and in 1833 Abbeville became the seat of Henry County, taking the role from Columbia. A post office opened the same year, and the town incorporated in 1853.
On May 20, 1906, an arson fire swept the Kirkland Street business district and destroyed most of it. Volunteer firefighters formed bucket brigades and saved the courthouse, and the town rebuilt its stores in brick — the downtown streetscape residents know today.

A courthouse town
The Henry County Courthouse anchors Courthouse Square, and downtown Abbeville still gathers around it — City Hall, the Memorial Library, the post office and the Archie Theatre are all part of the same small-town center.

If your family has pictures of old Abbeville — Kirkland Street before or after the fire, courthouse days, school classes — City Hall would love a copy for the city's collection.

Common Requests
Before this site's official launch
Water rates, standard due dates, deposit amounts, and late fees are set by town ordinance and weren't published in the public sources used to build this page, so none are stated here — each bill's amount and due date above are entered by town staff from the actual statement. The water office can confirm current amounts.
More Online Payments
Pay other town fees online — permits, licenses, deposits and more. This section is separate from water bill pay. Only pay an amount Town Hall has quoted you, and use the reference shown so your payment is credited correctly.
The Town receives the full amount; the convenience fee is $2.95 by bank account, $4.95 by card on payments up to $100, and 3.5% on larger payments.
